An Arizona teen was rescued from Mount St. Helens Thursday afternoon after he was injured on a hike. Andrew Maris, 19, was climbing Mount St. Helens with his bothers Thursday, according to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office. Maris, who led the group as they descended the mountain, was sliding on a snow field when he hit a large rock and fractured his ankle, the sheriff’s office said. Maris used his cell phone to call 911 at about 12:45 p.m. and the Volcano Rescue Team out of Yacolt responded and headed up the trail. Crews evaluated Maris and used a basket stretcher attached to a wheel to bring him down the trail, according to the sheriff’s office. Maris arrived at the base camp at about 7 p.m. and was taken to Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center. His condition was not immediately available. About 50 climbers were on the mountain at the time of the incident in what the sheriff’s office called subpar climbing conditions, with winds about 30 mph and limited visibility.
