Pouring her considerable energy into animal welfare causes

Growing up in India in the 1950s and ’60s, Caroline Reiswig saw much that troubled her. Her father was a colonel in the Indian Army, and the family had a dozen servants. But outside her home and her English school run by nuns, beggars scrabbled in the dirt. Packs of mangy, diseased stray dogs fought in the streets. “It made me a better human being, more empathetic, more of a do-gooder, because I saw so much injustice,” said Reiswig, 67, who speaks fluent Hindi and studied Nepali, Burmese and French. “Nobody would even give a second look. … But it hurt me. I never got anesthetized to that, ever. Thankfully.” Today, Reiswig, a retired corporate manager who has lived in Camas 12 years, pours her energy into animal welfare causes. County Republican caucus; no presidential straw poll

Clark County Republicans didn’t coalesce behind a presidential candidate during Saturday’s precinct caucuses, but many expressed a hope 2016 will be the year they unite as a local party. Unlike in previous years, there was no presidential straw poll. Instead, the state party will commit its delegates based on the outcome of the statewide May 24 presidential primary election. Port of Vancouver Commissioner President Jerry Oliver, instrumental in approval of a lease for what would be the nation’s largest oil-by-rail transfer terminal, announced he is vying for a seat in the Washington Legislature. Oliver, a Republican who was elected to the Port of Vancouver Board of Commissioners in 2007, is running for the 17th Legislative District seat currently held by Lynda Wilson, R-Vancouver. After longtime Republican Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, announced he will not seek re-election, Wilson said she will run for the state Senate, opening up her seat. Read more about Oliver's announcement.

80 gallons of oil spilled into Columbia River

Roughly 80 gallons of oil was spilled into the Columbia River by a vessel near Kalama, the state’s environmental agency said Friday.

The Nord Auckland, a 618-foot ship flagged in Singapore, reportedly spilled the waste oil during an internal oil transfer on Thursday morning.

More on the oil spill.
