Supreme Court denies hearing for casino case

The yearslong legal battle over the Cowlitz Indian Tribe’s right to a reservation near La Center is over.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear an appeal from opponents who challenged the tribe’s claim on the land, essentially arguing that a federal mandate was wrongly used to give the tribe a 152-acre plot in 2010.

The decision clears the tribe’s road ahead as it opens the $510 million Ilani Casino Resort on the land at the end of April. Today, the tribe will officially open the new Interstate 5 interchange at Exit 16 that it spent $32 million renovating to handle a deluge of casinogoers.

Dougan Falls murder victim ID’d; suspect arrested

A Portland man has been arrested on suspicion of  killing an acquaintance whose body was found Saturday near Dougan Falls in Skamania County.

Benjamin C. Serrato, 40, is accused of killing Christopher M. Libert, 40, of Portland. An autopsy revealed that Libert died of wounds he suffered after being shot and stabbed, according to a news release from Sheriff Dave Brown. Deputies believe he was killed sometime Friday evening.

Eight arrested during Vancouver Trump rally, counter-protest

Eight people were arrested during a Trump rally and counter-protest Sunday, only one of whom was from Clark County.

About 100 or so people convened at Esther Short Park to show support for President Donald Trump after a private organizer rented the stage and lawn area. The event attracted about as many counter-protesters.

Clark County updates speed limits

In response to concerns from the sheriff’s office, the fire marshall and concerned citizens, the Clark County council on Tuesday evening unanimously passed updates to speed limits and parking restrictions to county roads and streets.

Speaking at the council’s hearing, Matt Griswold, traffic engineering and operations section supervisor, told the council that as a result of new development some roads were seeing more fast-moving traffic.

It’s Bunny Palooza at the Humane Society

The Humane Society for Southwest Washington isn’t known for sheltering and adopting rabbits. But now it’s kicking off its first, and possibly last, Bunny Palooza on Wednesday.

The event lasts until April 9 and if you’ve ever wanted to cuddle with your own pet rabbit, you have dozens of bunnies to choose from at the shelter.
