Portland police officers pursued and arrested a man who ran from a traffic stop on Hayden Island and into the Columbia River. Officers stopped a vehicle around 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening on North Center Avenue on Hayden Island after they recognized the driver as someone with outstanding arrest warrants, according to the Portland Police Bureau. As soon as the car stopped, the driver, Kenan Dizdarevic, 27, hopped out and ran, police said. An officer gave chase while another addressed the car's passenger. Police said the passenger, Robert Sanchez, 38, got out of the car with a large knife in his hand, which he quickly dropped. Dizdarevic ran about 1 1/2 miles south, then down the river embankment. He jumped into the Columbia River before climbing out onto a dock with floating homes. A police K-9 unit responded and found Dizdarevic hiding in a storage shed. He was taken into custody without incident, according to police. Dizdarevic was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on suspicion of second-degree burglary, third-degree escape, attempting to elude, interfering with a peace officer and second-degree disorderly conduct, along with the outstanding arrest warrants. Sanchez, the passenger, was booked on suspicion of possession of heroin, possessing a restricted weapon as a felon and third-degree possession of a controlled substance.
