Rose Village: Altrusa International of Clark County donates books to children at a recent literacy event at Washington Elementary School.

Rose Village -- Members of the nonprofit organization Altrusa International of Clark County donated books and their time to a recent Family Literacy Night at Washington Elementary School. The organization became involved in Washington Elementary's literacy events when it awarded a $1,500 grant to the school to purchase books and other supplies. In addition to donating books, volunteers set up tables, check families in and help at the craft tables. Washington Elementary has held two literacy nights so far this year, with two additional nights planned for the rest of the year. "The goal of the literacy nights is to promote literacy with our students and families as an activity that takes place inside the classroom as well as at home," said Elizabeth Owen, family-community resource coordinator for the school. "We want children to experience the fun and joy of reading, and we want parents and families to gain practical strategies for encouraging reading at home and in their child's daily life." Each student in attendance receive his or her own copy of a book to take home at the end of the most recent literacy night event.
